Pillbox Hike Hawaii

The «Pillbox Hike» on O’ahu (Hawaii) is a very moderate hike. How to get there? How to find it? In this article we’ll inform you about the most important things to consider before going there the first time. As many places on Hawaii, this particular location is super-crowded and it’s definitely worth to prepare properly in advance.

Preparation

The «Pillbox» hike on O’ahu is a very moderate 30 minutes hike. However, please keep in mind that you still need to climb at some points of the path. So yes, it’s just about 30 minutes to the top – but it’s a very steep path which can be very muddy/slippy. So as usual, please prepare accordingly always. Rafa has done this hike with «Slippers» but we definitely NOT recommend this to anyone. It was kind of painful to go up and down that way. Rafa simply had no other chance as his feet were full of blisters (as we did the legal path hike to «Haiku Stairs aka Stairwais to Heaven» just a few days before. That’s basically one of the most dangerous hikes on Hawaii and has taken us +10 hours). Anyway, let’s focus on the «Pillbox» hike for now.

Just simply look at these stunning views! These shots were taken right after the sunrise. In order to get similar shots, get up early! We did mounted our headlamps and walked up there as it was still dark.

Go early! Ideally before sunrise. This place is extremely crowded, as it can be considered as a moderate hike. So many tourists can do it with any fitness level.

How to get there?

From Honolulu/Waikiki it will take about 30-40min to get there. Below you can find the map. Please just keep in mind that the parking spots are very limited. You might want to park your car somewhere down the street and then walk up entering the path shown below.

If you walk up the road and reach the dead end, don’t enter the street on your left. This is a private street. There were even signs warning of being shot. Holy. We’re from Switzerland and are really not used to these kind of warnings in our county.
